Fresh peaches, sweet corn available July 9 market

posted by SPD Communications on July 8, 2015 Biltz-Peaches

Last week at the market we saw our first sweet corn of the season at Biltz Greenhouses’ stand. This week two more vendors say they’re bringing sweet corn too (VanAntwerp’s Farm Market and Wilson Farm). VanAntwerp’s also says they have some cantaloupe ready, along with eggplant and ground cherries. What are ground cherries? They’re a small orange fruit covered in papery husk, and similar in size and shape to a cherry tomato. The flavor is a pleasant, unique tomato/pineapple like blend.

This week a few food trucks come back to the market for the first time this season, including Chef Dan’s Southern Comfort which recently opened their restaurant at 5539 E. Washington Street in historic Irvington. Now they’re settled in and back on the food truck too!

Also, we’ve never had a battle of the chicken salads, but The Twisted Sicilian and Caveman Truck are both featuring their take on the lunch staple. Take your pick between the Sicilian Chicken Salad from Twisted Sicilian or Caveman’s Chicken Salad Lettuce Cups.

Want to find out how to pick a fresh peach? Registered dietitian Jenna McClean and farmer Ernie Biltz explain in our latest market video.

Caveman Truck offers paleo-friendly menu

posted by SPD Communications on June 24, 2013

This interview is the first of a series about some of our food trucks you’ll see at the Statehouse Market in 2013. We interviewed Shelby Malaterre, the owner of Caveman Truck, who opened one of the first paleo/primal food truck concepts in the nation last summer.

About the Paleo diet

The Paleo diet is a low-carb diet variation based on the foods most likely eaten by Paleolithic-era humans (cavemen). The diet follows a few restrictions, but is fairly open. It allows for fish, meats, mushrooms, fruit, vegetables, and many others. Foods not allowed in the diet include grains, processed foods, dairy products, refined salt and sugar and a few others. More information on the Paleo diet can be found in the links below.

Caveman Truck Interview

How did you get started with Caveman Truck?

Malaterre: I had not realized how the food truck scene in Indy had grown until I went to the Super Bowl celebrations in February 2012. At the time, I had been paleo for a month and I was completely sold on the lifestyle. I looked at every truck that I passed that night for something I could eat without a ton of special instructions given. Alas, I found nothing.

The next day the idea just hit me to start a paleo-friendly food truck. I had wanted to be a chef and own a food business for as long as I could remember and felt like it was the right idea at the right time.

Describe the kind of food you sell.

Malaterre: I sell the highest quality local pasture raised meats and organically-focused produce items. Foods are ready to eat and contain no gluten, soy, or casein which are some of the major food allergies.

Where is your favorite place to park your truck?

Malaterre: The Statehouse Market is a great stop!

What made you interested in the Paleo lifestyle?

Malaterre: I initially started paleo just to lose weight. I figured I would lose what I wanted and probably return to a standard American diet after I had leaned out. After all the success I had in the first 3 weeks, my life was changed and I knew I would stick with it.

What’s your favorite item on the menu?

Malaterre: The foods I serve directly reflect my personal taste, but I eat Barnyard Chili almost every day.

Anything else you would like to share?

Malaterre: If you would like to learn more about me, please visit cavemantruck.com/press

Our recommendation from Caveman Truck:

Bacon Hash, Barnyard Chili or Tacos served in Jicama shells.

Stop by the Statehouse Market and try some of Caveman Truck’s delicious paleo food! Caveman Truck can be found at the market biweekly, starting with it’s next visit on June 27. Check out our vendor profile of Caveman Truck and follow them on the web and on Twitter @cavemantruck.
