Don’t miss out on the last Statehouse Market of 2021!

posted by SPD Communications on October 25, 2021 SHM Week 8 Blog Pic

Over the past 20 weeks, we’ve been fortunate to bring some of Indiana’s finest farmers, artisans, and food truck entrepreneurs to the Indiana Government Center campus and spend our lunch hour with fellow state employees each Thursday. Our 20th and final Statehouse Market of 2021 is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28.

As the 2021 Market season comes to a close, we are reminiscing on all the great times we’ve had this year – enjoying lunch with our coworkers, celebrating the Market’s 9th birthday, fresh air and sunshine, delicious food truck cuisine, fresh produce from local farms, baked goods, fresh popcorn, local honey, being part of the 2021-22 SECC Kickoff event, seeing familiar friendly faces and making new friends, and so much more! We hope you’ve enjoyed the 2021 season as much as we have!

This isn’t goodbye, just see you later. The Statehouse Market will return in 2022, but in the meantime – be sure to visit the Market one last time this year. We can’t wait to see you there!

Statehouse Market Week 17: Down to the ‘final four’

posted by SPD Communications on September 10, 2018 Statehouse Market Week 17

There are only four more Thursdays before the Statehouse Market closes for the 2018 season!

We’re not crying, YOU’RE crying!

Ahem.

That means only four more chances to visit some of the Hoosier State’s finest food trucks, a smattering of amazing Indiana farmers, and a group of entrepreneurs who grow, bake, roast and harvest top-shelf snacks, coffee, condiments, dairy products and much more.

We’re with you; we wish the market would never end too, but the good news is that there is still time to be part of the fun.

The Sept. 13 market is the 17th event of the season, and, like always, we’ll be set-up on Robert D. Orr Plaza with an array of food trucks and vendors representing all that is good about Hoosier entrepreneurship.

We’re looking forward to seeing you as the leaves start to turn, temperatures begin to cool and we bid adieu to another wonderful summer and welcome fall. But for now, it’s still summer and that means the Statehouse Market is still in season!

Check out this week’s lineup below and join us from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the plaza!

Statehouse Market Week 16: The post-Labor Day homestretch begins!

posted by SPD Communications on August 31, 2018 Statehouse Market Week 16

Labor Day weekend is traditionally seen as the unofficial end of summer.

Gone are the barbecues and pool parties, and in their place Hoosiers ready for sweatshirt weather, football and pumpkin spice-flavored everything.

Well, according to our calendars, there are five — count ’em — FIVE Statehouse Markets remaining in 2018. And since the farmer’s market on Robert D. Orr Plaza is pretty much synonymous with the warm rays of summer in Indy, we think there’s still plenty of fun in the sun left this year.

We’re so confident, in fact, that we might even (gasp!) wear white clothing after Labor Day!

Yes, it’s a potential fashion faux pas, but that’s just how daring we can be — at least when it comes to choosing pants in September.

And why not?

After all, that’s the sort of trend-bucking, devil-may-care Hoosier spirit you’ll see each Thursday at the market as some of the area’s top farmers, artisans, entrepreneurs and mobile restaurant maestros gather for an event the smells of which alone simply scream “summer.”

So keep the shades handy and the warm weather wardrobe at the ready. Summer’s far from over, and we hope you’ll enjoy these last few Market Days with us – rain or shine, summer weather or fall-like chilly temperatures.

As always, we’ll meet you for lunch on the plaza between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

We’ll see you Thursday! Until then, keep looking on the sunny side of life and check out the Sept. 6 lineup below.

Five Questions with Soul Sista On the Move

posted by SPD Communications on August 22, 2018 Five Questions

Soul Sista On the MoveFrom festivals to farmer’s markets throughout the Circle City, Tressie Mickens-Maxwell’s blue and gold-hued food truck strives to bring a little heart and a lot of soul (food) to her customers.

With a menu that features many “comfort food” items and sides, Mickens-Maxwell’s mobile restaurant has quickly gained a following and made an impact in the competitive, ever-busy Indianapolis food truck scene.

Mickens-Maxwell’s distinctive truck is always “on the move,” perpetually roaming to and fro to bring home-style meals — and plenty of smiles — to hungry patrons. Soul Sista On the Move has proven to be a popular lunchtime stop for many at the Statehouse Market as well, and with a menu that features familiar favorites like mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, pork chops, chicken wings and a whole lot more, it’s easy to see why.

Fortunately, Soul Sista On the Move makes frequent stops at the Statehouse Market.

Read on to hear how Mickens-Maxwell and her crew are bringing their own brand of delicious soul food straight to you.

Q: Soul Sista on the Move specializes in “soul food.” What, to you, is “soul food,” and what inspired you to bring it to Indy via food truck?

A: Soul food is food that is good for the soul. I have always enjoyed cooking and once I started seeing the new trend of food trucks, I was determined to have one.

Q: Who are the people making the Soul Sista food truck a success with customers, and what are their roles?

A: My aunt has been with me since the first day I opened the truck. She helps me prep, wash the dishes, and she cleans the truck. One of my high school friends has helped me these last few years preparing food or cashiering.  But I do all the cooking to ensure that the food tastes the same every time.

Q: What do you like most about the Statehouse Market?

A: I like the staff because they help you get to the right spot; they are very informative. The customers are always pleasant and they buy food. I also love the fact that we are very well-welcomed at the Statehouse.

Q: What are a few of your more popular menu items?

A: wings, pork chops and sweet potatoes

Q: What do you like best about operating a food truck in Indianapolis?

A: Going to all the different events, jobs and especially the festivals. Indianapolis is so welcoming of food trucks.

Happy, happy birthday, Statehouse Market!

posted by SPD Communications on July 9, 2018 market blog week 8

You only turn 6 once, and the Statehouse Market is celebrating its birthday with the amazing state employees, specialty vendors and food trucks that have helped make it such a fun success since 2012.

The Week 8 lineup certainly guarantees a “bon anniversaire” all its own, but our biggest birthday wish is that you’ll join us in celebrating from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, on Robert D. Orr Plaza.

We’ll bring the food!

And to answer one very important question: Yes, there will be cake — cupcakes to be exact, thanks to the one and only Flying Cupcake.

In case you weren’t aware, delicious confections are kind of their “thing,” and to help us celebrate, they’ve produced pastries bearing the Statehouse Market logo! They’re chocolate AND vanilla because, really, you can’t have one without the other. Also, it’s our birthday, so we’re entitled to be just a little extra.

The tasty treats will be in short supply, so get them while they last!

Come help us blow out the proverbial candles by shopping for fresh, Hoosier-grown produce, and indulging in some of the very best street food the Indianapolis area has to offer.

We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our birthday — this year or any other. The only thing missing is you, so make plans to meet us for lunch this Thursday!

And while you’re here, scope out some of the photos from our 2012 debut below.

Five Questions with J & J – A Taste of Home Catering

posted by SPD Communications on July 6, 2018 Five Questions: Meet Our Vendors

Juanita Ware Coleman believes that great food shouldn’t break the bank.

At the same time, she recognizes that quality is key when it comes to cuisine; after all, each customer expects a top-shelf dish no matter the cost.

Coleman’s goal was to marry affordability with tasty, home-cooked meals, leading her to co-found J & J A Taste of Home Catering. The catering service also has a food truck offering many of the same meals that is scheduled to appear at this year’s Statehouse Market.

Read on to learn how Coleman’s entrepreneurial endeavor is bringing meals “just like Mom used to make” to the Circle City.J & J A Taste of Home Catering

Q: J & J A Taste of Home Catering strives to offer home-style meals at affordable prices. The menu includes breakfast, appetizers and several desserts. What are a few of your favorites to prepare and why?

A: My favorite thing to prepare is anything with the recipe. I love doing other ethnic groups’ recipes.

Q: Juanita Ware Coleman earned her degree in dietary management from Ivy Tech, which later led her to open A Taste of Home. With a lifelong love of cooking behind you, how did it feel to finally have a culinary business of your own? What has been the best part and what are some challenges you’ve faced?

A: It felt really good to be able to start my own business with the help of my husband.

The best part about owning your own business is just that — it’s your business. You work hard for yourself. The challenges with owning your own business are that most people want you to water down your prices or they won’t let you know in advance that their budget is small. We work with all sizes of budgets.

Q:  You learned a lot of your craft by helping your mother and grandmother in the kitchen at a young age. What is some advice they gave you that you use today in your business?

A: If it doesn’t smell good, then it probably doesn’t taste good, and don’t feed anyone something you won’t eat!

Q:  J & J A Taste of Home Catering Service is appearing at the Statehouse Market for the first time in summer 2018. What are you most looking forward to about your market visits?

A: I’m looking forward to interacting with the people and giving them A Taste of Home’s food.

Q: Does A Taste of Home have any signature menu items? What are a few choices that customers return to again and again?

A: I guess you could say, on our food truck, our signature items are our jerk chicken, steak tacos and jerk loaded fries. As far as catering goes, the fried chicken is always a repeat.
