Five questions with Groomsville Popcorn

posted by SPD Communications on May 23, 2018 Five Questions: Meet Our Vendors

Groomsville Popcorn is a new addition to this year’s Statehouse Market. Get to know a little about the family, the business and its delicious (and healthy!) products below.

Q: You are fifth generation farmers from Tipton. Are you the first to harvest and sell popcorn, or has that always been part of the family business?

A: In the 1980s our family grew bulk popcorn for Orville Redenbacher. I am the first generation to focus on growing and popping popcorn for our local area.

Q: Please tell us about the family members involved in the business.

A: Groomsville Popcorn is very much a family business. Jacob (26) primarily runs the business but is often getting help from his wife Amanda (24), his dad (59), his mom (59), his brother (29), sister-in-law (18), and father-in-law. Additionally, we have neighbors and friends that will help us out with the Saturday farmers markets.

One of the more unique products offered by Groomsville Popcorn is popcorn that pops right off the cob.

Q: What sets Groomsville Popcorn apart from other brands?

A: Groomsville PopcornTM is grown and popped on our family farm in Tipton County. There are very few farmers that grow popcorn and then pop their crop to sell to the consumer. We are involved in every aspect of producing our popcorn and providing the finished product to the customer. As the farmer we have the flexibility to choose exactly what variety of popcorn we want to grow and can vary varieties for different characteristics (mushroom, low hull, color, etc.). As an operation that sells directly to customers, we are very in-tune to how people want their popcorn grown and continue to adjust our growing practices. For example, we are now transitioning a portion of our farm into organic production – something our customers have an interest in. We also offer a microwave popcorn product that pops directly off the ear – something unique in the industry.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about appearing at the Statehouse Market?

A: We are looking forward to having the opportunity to serve and interact with customers and be a part of a market in the heart of Indianapolis. We really enjoy bringing a small part of the farming experience to people who may have never experienced a popcorn farm in person.

Q: Do you have a motto or philosophy that you use to guide your business/work?

A: WE ONLY SELL WHAT WE GROW. Groomsville PopcornTM is grown on a family farm. The family plants the popcorn seeds at just the right time and carefully nurtures the crop until harvest when its picked, dried, and packaged for sale to our customers.

WE ONLY USE NON-GMO SEED. Groomsville PopcornTM prides itself in using non-GMO seed.

WE PROVIDE A WHOLESOME, HEALTHY SNACK THAT TASTES GREAT. Anytime you go into the store, you are bombarded with choices — how do you really know what you’re buying is healthy? With Groomsville PopcornTM the primary ingredient is whole grain popcorn with no preservatives.
