What are you eating from the market this week?

posted by SPD Communications on June 22, 2016 Fresh Local Produce

Week five of the market is upon us. Join the vendors and food trucks listed below Thursday at the Statehouse Market. The market is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the temporary location in front of the Indiana State Museum.

Here are three things to look for this week:

  1. Don’t know what to eat? It’s always a hard decision. This week, I’d try the Turkey, Bacon, Pesto with Muenster Grilled Cheese or Wasabi-Infused Pretzel Bites from Der Pretzel Wagen. If that’s not your style, Nacho Mama’s features her Vegan Rice Bowl for only $6.
  2. What’s in season? Biltz Greenhouses brought fresh blueberries and the first peaches of the season last week. Expect more this week. Biltz sets up over on the Cultural Trail side.  Check out Wilson Farm too! I really like when our farmers share what they’re bringing so that I can share with you. Here’s what Dave Wilson texted me that he’ll have Thursday: tomatoes, potatoes, sugar peas, cabbage, candy onions, red beets, pickler cucumbers, cherries, garlic, free range eggs and rabbit.
  3. Two food trucks make their first appearance this season tomorrow. Da Blue Lagoon returns with it’s take on Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine. Also Karma Kitchen, a comfort food specialist from Anderson, makes their first trip.

Fresh peaches, sweet corn available July 9 market

posted by SPD Communications on July 8, 2015 Biltz-Peaches

Last week at the market we saw our first sweet corn of the season at Biltz Greenhouses’ stand. This week two more vendors say they’re bringing sweet corn too (VanAntwerp’s Farm Market and Wilson Farm). VanAntwerp’s also says they have some cantaloupe ready, along with eggplant and ground cherries. What are ground cherries? They’re a small orange fruit covered in papery husk, and similar in size and shape to a cherry tomato. The flavor is a pleasant, unique tomato/pineapple like blend.

This week a few food trucks come back to the market for the first time this season, including Chef Dan’s Southern Comfort which recently opened their restaurant at 5539 E. Washington Street in historic Irvington. Now they’re settled in and back on the food truck too!

Also, we’ve never had a battle of the chicken salads, but The Twisted Sicilian and Caveman Truck are both featuring their take on the lunch staple. Take your pick between the Sicilian Chicken Salad from Twisted Sicilian or Caveman’s Chicken Salad Lettuce Cups.

Want to find out how to pick a fresh peach? Registered dietitian Jenna McClean and farmer Ernie Biltz explain in our latest market video.

Statehouse Market returns in new location on May 28

posted by SPD Communications on April 30, 2015 Apples from Bryant Farm

The State Personnel Department is happy to announce the Opening Day of the 2015 Statehouse Market as Thursday, May 28. Local farmers and produce vendors join some of Indy’s top food trucks as we start the fourth season of the market. The market spans 19 weeks this season from May 28 until October 1.

We’re two days away from Opening Day of the Statehouse Market. Listed below are the vendors you can expect to see week one.

This season our location is slightly changed as we’re no longer between the North and South buildings on Robert Orr Plaza. The food trucks and a few produce vendors are lining up on both sides of the south section of Senate Avenue, which is closed on market Thursdays. The majority of our produce vendors are setting up along the Washington Street sidewalk near the south lawn of the Statehouse. So if you’re still following, the market forms an “L” shape around the Statehouse’s south lawn.

Through traffic remains open on Robert Orr Plaza during the market but all cars must go north to Ohio Street. Next week we’ll have some more information about what some of the vendors are bringing Opening Day.

Join us for Week #11 at the Market

posted by SPD Communications on July 29, 2014

Are you ready for week eleven of the Statehouse Market this Thursday? Van Antwerp Farms brought the first watermelons of the season last week. And Wildflower Ridge Honey’s debuted new jalapeño infused honey! Check out the list below for a list of what vendors are bringing.

If you are looking for new selections, have you tried Simple Taste Bakery’s new paleo pulled pork sandwich? New this week,  is a lunch combo: a paleo pulled pork sandwich with potato salad and a drink for $8. The pulled pork is cooked fresh from The Pork Shoppe.

Tulip Tree Creamery will also be debuting two new cheeses this week. Trillium which is similar to Brie and Nettle which is a mild Chevre. Both cheeses go great with fruit and baguettes!

This week we also take a trip to Greenfield as we debut our new vendor video with a farm visit to Wilson Farm. The video can be found in the post below and all our video profiles are uploaded to our YouTube Channel.

We welcome back some popular food trucks including Serendipity, Nacho Mama, Little Eataly, Byrne’s Grilled Pizza, Duos Indy and Mac Genie. The weather should be great so we hope to see you tomorrow!
