Statehouse Market returns in new location on May 28

posted by SPD Communications on April 30, 2015 Apples from Bryant Farm

The State Personnel Department is happy to announce the Opening Day of the 2015 Statehouse Market as Thursday, May 28. Local farmers and produce vendors join some of Indy’s top food trucks as we start the fourth season of the market. The market spans 19 weeks this season from May 28 until October 1.

We’re two days away from Opening Day of the Statehouse Market. Listed below are the vendors you can expect to see week one.

This season our location is slightly changed as we’re no longer between the North and South buildings on Robert Orr Plaza. The food trucks and a few produce vendors are lining up on both sides of the south section of Senate Avenue, which is closed on market Thursdays. The majority of our produce vendors are setting up along the Washington Street sidewalk near the south lawn of the Statehouse. So if you’re still following, the market forms an “L” shape around the Statehouse’s south lawn.

Through traffic remains open on Robert Orr Plaza during the market but all cars must go north to Ohio Street. Next week we’ll have some more information about what some of the vendors are bringing Opening Day.

Farm Visit Friday: Bryant Farm offers locally grown produce

posted by SPD Communications on August 19, 2014

Last season, as part of our #farmvisitfriday, we visited Bryant Farm in Ellettsville to see what they grow on their farm and bring to you at the Statehouse Market.

What started as a large family garden some years ago is now an 11-acre farm that’s getting bigger each season at Bryant Farm in Ellettsville. The farm is owned and operated by Rex and Kim Bryant and is almost completely family-run, with help from the three Bryant daughters and intern Sasha. Kim walked us around the 11 acres of land that grows everything from cabbage (pictured above) to green beans, with each vegetable started at the farm from seed. As you’ll see in the photos below, Bryant Farm has many maturing apple trees, so look for those later this season along with other great produce from this vendor at the Statehouse Market.

Check out pictures from our visit to Bryant Farm:

Recipe: Cheese and Vegetable Quesadilla

posted by SPD Communications on July 11, 2013

Adapted from a recipe at greatist.com

Buying ingredients:

While many of the items can be found in stores, we have listed Statehouse Market vendors where you can find these items.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 whole-grain/whole-wheat tortilla
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced white onion (Bryant Farms)
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 cup shredded Kickapoo cheese (Ludwig)
  • 1/2 a large tomato, sliced (Flat Rock Farms)
  • Small amount of fresh herbs (Van Antwerp)
  • 1/2 cup of peppers in a variety of colors (Biltz Greenhouses)
  • Dash of salt and pepper

What to Do:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan with medium heatVeggieQuesadilla
  2. Sautée onions until mostly translucent
  3. Scoop the onions from the pan into a bowl
  4. Place the pan back, and lay out one tortilla on it
  5. Shred the cheese and sprinkle it on the tortilla
  6. Evenly spread the rest of the ingredients over the cheese
  7. When the cheese has melted about halfway, place the other tortilla on top
  8. Flip the quesadilla and lightly brown the other side
